Celebrate Women and Girls in Astronomy for the chance to attend an IAU Symposium on Diversity and Inclusion in Japan!
8 February 2019
A new special prize has been announced for event organisers that conduct activities for IAU100 that innovatively celebrate Women and Girls in Astronomy. We strongly encourage the organization of activities throughout 2019, as the perfect opportunity to celebrate girls and women in astronomy — encouraging girls to consider careers in astronomy and by recognizing the important role of women for the advancement of astronomy.
More than 150 events in 45 countries are registered with IAU100 to celebrate Women and Girls in Astronomy in February and throughout the year. 11 February marks the United Nations’ International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which represents the perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements and activities of women and girls in astronomy worldwide. This can include public talks, activities, workshops, and more. You can find examples of ideas for organising activities and information on how to run inclusive and accessible events on the Inclusive Astronomy website. The IAU100 poster for Women and Girls in Astronomy can be found here.
We invite event organisers and participants to share their activities on social media using #IAU100 and #WomenInAstronomy. IAU100 also encourages everyone to share their favourite roles models in astronomy, space and science using these hashtags throughout the month of February.
A new prize has been established for event organisers who conduct a registered activity for IAU100 celebrating women and girls in astronomy:
Contest Rules
-Eligible events include those that will be held on or before 30 June 2019 and that are registered on the IAU100 Event Calendar under the category “IAU Women and Girls in Astronomy Event”.
-Event organisers will be invited to complete a feedback form to gather information about their event. IAU100 will use this information to select one event organiser who conducted an event that most innovatively and inclusively celebrated women and girls in astronomy through their activities. Eligible events will be assessed for innovation, creativity, sustainability, inclusivity and accessibility.
-This individual will be invited to attend the IAU Symposium: “Astronomy for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion” in Tokyo, Japan from 12-15 November 2019, hosted by the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ). This symposium will lay the groundwork for future IAU Resolutions on Equity, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policies in Astronomy.
-IAU100 will cover the chosen winner’s registration cost for the symposium, up to €1000 for travel and up to €500 for accommodation.
